Match Preview: Nigeria vs Congo DR

Nigeria's quest to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations commences today against Congo DR.

The Super Eagles would want to emerge as one of the two teams from the group to gain a spot in Morocco next year, but they will first of all have to scale the Congolese hurdle.

Being African champions alone, entails that there is no plausible explanation why Nigeria shouldn't qualify and defend their title.

Not like it is not possible for a champion to fail in a qualification bid for the next competition,it doesn't bode of the team because the first the first effort will look like a fluke.

Oyakhilome Sacks Pastor As Divorce Mess Rages

There does not seem to be an end in site with the controversies at Christ Embassy over the divorce proceedings initiated by Anita Oyakhilome. The Sun newspaper has further details including names of the law team to handle this case on behalf of Anita Oyakhilome.

The mess will begin once this gets to court as this is far from being an amicable split. I fear this is just the beginning.

 Excerpts from The Sun Newspaper

The controversy surrounding the divorce suit filed in court by Rev Anita, the estranged wife of the founder and General Overseer of Christ Embassy Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, in which she has accused her husband of ‘adultery’ and ‘unreasonable behaviour’ continued to rage all through the week even as emerging facts indicate that the bitter feud has already claimed its first casualty.

The first victim of the couple’s break-up, Saturday Sun learnt from some officials of the troubled church is one of the pastors who worked with Rev Anita Oyakhilome at the London branch of the church. Simply identified as Rev Grace, she was said to have been sacked by Pastor Chris in May when she allegedly raised a prayer team to pray for the restoration of peace in the church’s first family when Rev Anita, who headed the London church, stopped attending services.

Borno: Nigerian Warplanes Carry out Air Strikes on 'All Boko Haram Bases'

Borno- In a bid to prevent the Islamist Boko Haram sect from capturing northeastern Nigeria and stop their terror activities in the country, the Nigerian government has sent in warplanes to carry out air strikes on the sect's bases.

Extract from Reuters:

Nigerian warplanes are carrying out air strikes against Boko Haram militant bases in northeast Borno state, a senior official said on Friday, in a government counter-attack against the group's apparent drive to create an Islamist enclave.

The official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters Nigeria's military was battling Boko Haram fighters at Bama, 70 km (45 miles) southeast of the Borno state capital Maiduguri.

Air strikes have been carried out "on all the Boko Haram bases", the official said, adding this reflected President Goodluck Jonathan's order for a "fully-fledged war" against the group which has waged a bloody insurgency since 2009.

DSS to quiz Alimodu Sheriff over Boko Haram sponsorship allegation

The Department of State Security, DSS, says it will be inviting former Borno state governor, Alimodu Sheriff, for questioning following recent allegations leveled against him by Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, who said he’s a Boko Haram sponsor.
Speaking at a news conference today in Abuja, spokesperson for DSS, Marilyn Ogar, said the former governor had in the past been invited to the DSS office for questioning over Boko Haram activities and they will be inviting him again. Ogar also dismissed insinuations that former Army chief, Lt. Gen Azubuike Ihejirika is a Boko Haram sponsor, describing it as untrue, uncharitable & wicked. Find the statement after the cut…

“I would want to say here that it is absolutely uncharitable for us as Nigerians to reward somebody who laid down his life in pursuing this same people (Boko Haram) for us to accept that he can in any way be associated with or seen sponsoring the same sect he together with this service succeeded in pulling down their activities in Kano, Okene and other parts of Nigeria to a halt and pushing them to Sambisa forest. Its the same man we want, because he is no longer in office, to say he is the one sponsoring the sect. I think its being wicked. That shouldn’t be the way we reward people who lay down their lives to provide a secure environment for us. As for the former Governor, he has been invited twice by this service and the service has also invited him again” she said

Al-Shabaab co-founder confirmed killed by US air strike in Somalia

Pentagon hails ‘major symbolic and operational loss’ for Islamist militant group with death of Ahmed Abdi Godane
The Pentagon has confirmed that Ahmed Abdi Godane, the leader of the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab, was killed in a US air strike earlier this week.
The United States previously said that the strike inside Somalia had targeted Godane, but did not know whether he had been killed.
“We have confirmed that Ahmed Godane, the co-founder of al-Shabaab, has been killed,” said rear admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, describing it as a “major symbolic and operational loss” for the militant group, which aligned itself with al-Qaida.
Al-Shabaab is fighting to topple Somalia’s western-backed government and regularly launches bombings and gun attacks against state targets and civilians. Godane’s death could now lead to an internal power struggle.
On Wednesday US officials had said they were still investigating to see whether the strike on an al-Shabaab encampment had killed Godane, 37, who reportedly trained with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
At least three strikes hit a convoy of al-Shabaab vehicles in southern Somalia on Monday night, according to witnesses and a spokesman for the group who spoke later with the Associated Press. The al-Shabaab representative said that six al-Shabaab fighters had been killed in the strikes.
The air raid came days after African Union (AU) troops and Somali government forces launched “Operation Indian Ocean”, a major offensive aimed at seizing key ports from al-Shabaab and cutting off one of their key sources of revenue: multi-million dollar exports of charcoal. AU forces were targeting Shabaab on several fronts, with Ugandan troops leading the offensives against the main port of Barawe, south of the capital, Mogadishu.
The commander of the AU in Somalia has said the death of Godane would be a “proud and happy moment for all Africa”.
Godane, who has a passion for poetry, seized world attention a year ago with the Westgate mall attack in Nairobi, which left at least 67 dead. He warned Kenya that it would suffer further atrocities unless it withdrew its troops from the AU force in Somalia.

American Plane With Unresponsive Pilot Flies Over Cuba

The fighters broke away before the aircraft overflew Cuba

An American aircraft whose pilot has been unresponsive for hours was escorted by U.S. military F-15 fighters over the south Atlantic Ocean on Friday until the aircraft entered Cuban airspace, officials said. The fighter planes, operating under the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), broke away from the potentially troubled aircraft before it entered that country’s airspace. The F-15s returned to base for refueling while NORAD continued to track the plane as it quickly overflew Cuba while flying to the south.
Those aboard the aircraft, a SOCATA TBM-700 turboprop with tail number N900KN, may be suffering from hypoxia, NORAD said. Hypoxia can disable pilots and passengers aboard high-flying aircraft that lose cabin pressurization if they don’t engage supplemental oxygen systems before they’re rendered unconscious.
The aircraft left Rochester, New York Friday morning with a planned destination of Naples, Florida. Its last heading change was over North Carolina, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
It’s possible the aircraft’s crew is incapacitated from hypoxia and the plane is operating purely on pre-configured autopilot settings. When a U.S. military pilot attempts to make contact with a pilot who isn’t responding over the radio, he or she can attempt a series of hand signals or aircraft movements, such as a shaking of the wings, to establish basic communication.

It would be noted that the Federal Government had previously directed schools to re-open on October 13, 2014, but following a positive response from the health minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, on better containment efforts on the disease by the country, the Federal Government has now re-directed schools to re-open on September 22.
Briefing newsmen in Abuja, Ibrahim Shekarau, the minister of education, said,

According to him, “The training of minimum of two health officials per school as regards the management of the disease continues and should end on or before 22nd of September”.
He directed all schools yet to access basic requirements such as the temperature measuring equipment to do so before the new resumption date.
He also directed that the state ministries of education should put in place rapid response team that would address any reported case of Ebola to ensure safe measures are in place in the fight against the disease.
The minister also warned that no reported case should be trivialised or discarded as he called on state ministries of education and commissioners of education to ensure adequate provision of water, soaps, and disinfectants that would ensure a disease free environment in the schools.

Boko Haram: FG denies hiring Davis as negotiator

The Federal Government has denied hiring Australia’s Stephen Davis as a Boko Haram negotiator.
The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, who disclosed government’s position on the issue in Abuja on Friday, said the government has no plan of prosecuting any Nigerian for now following the allegations made by the Australian.
Davis has insisted that former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika are Boko Haram sponsors.
He also mentioned an unnamed senior official of the Central Bank of Nigeria and an Egypt-based man as those funding the sect.
Davis, who refused to disclose the identity of the CBN official, said his allegations were informed by discussions he had with several Boko Haram field commanders.
But Omeri insisted that government has not hired anybody to negotiate on its behalf with the Boko Haram.
“For now nobody has been hired by the government to negotiate on its behalf with Boko Haram. Anytime the government decides to do so, it will make it known to the public.
“The government is still investigating the allegations made by the alleged negotiator. However, the government has no plan to question anybody because of those allegations made by the Australian,” he stated.

Cape Town – MTN [JSE:MTN] has reached an agreement in principle with specialist tower company IHS Holding to operate MTN’s 9 151 mobile network towers in Nigeria.
The transaction is expected to reduce MTN Nigeria’s operating costs, drive network efficiencies and further expand MTN’s voice and data capacity, the South African mobile giant said in a statement on Thursday.
In terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, the towers will be transferred to a new company which will be owned jointly by MTN and IHS, but IHS will have full operational control of the underlying business.

Igbos are better off in my govt – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the attention his administration is giving the Igbos whom he said are well represented in his government and are being appointed to positions which no previous administrations ever gave them.
The President also said the Igbos had also benefited from many projects completed by his government in the South-East.
He said these during this year’s World Igbo Congress Day in Houston, Texas, United States.
The event had held on Saturday, but a copy of the President’s speech at the ceremony was only made available to journalists by the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Thursday.
President Jonathan, who said his administration’s appointments were based on competence, equity and fairness, said he would leave it to historians to determine whose administration had done more for the Igbos in terms of federal appointments.
He said, “In the pursuit of productivity and excellence, we have appointed competent and capable men and women to positions of high authority and strategic responsibility in all fields of national endeavour.
“In our dogged determination to develop our country, the Igbos are well represented and in some of these appointments, the Igbos are having them for the first time.
“Some have said that this government has done more in appointments than any other in our history for the Igbos, but that is a matter for the pundits and historians. Let me state that appointments by this administration, across the country, will continue to be based on equity, fairness and competence.
“Even when some utilise politics to undermine our commitment to fairness and justice, we will deploy the principle of Federal Character to progressively correct it. No part of Nigeria under my leadership will be shortchanged.”
