A TheCable exclusive has alleged that the phantom ceasefire brokered
between Nigeria and the Boko Haram group has uncovered a money-making
scam that has been on for the past two years involving top officials in
the Federal Government.
The ceasefire fraud, The Cable says, left President Jonathan
embarrassed, and the newspaper says this is not the first time the
president has been deceived into thinking he was making a genuine peace
deal.
As the story goes, the plan had been in motion a few years ago, and
President Jonathan was deceived to set up a Boko Haram Amnesty
Committee, with the aim of reaching out to the leaders of the Boko Haram
sect.
The committee, inaugurated in April 2013, had a singular aim: develop an
amnesty program and work out disarmament within a 60-day timeframe.
However, members of the committee planned to cash in on this.
They believed that, just as Niger-Delta amnesty program helped a lot of
people cash out and became instant billionaires under dubious means, the
same could be done with the Boko Haram situation.
The only hurdle was the facelessness of Boko Haram. Unlike with the
Niger-Delta militants, President Jonathan had no idea how the terrorists
would be brought to a table for the crucial dialogue.
The government officials – Aso Rock insiders, mainly – saw an
opportunity here and cooked up a plan to arrange fake Boko Haram leaders
who would collect millions of dollars from the government coffers
funded from the security budget.
