Arsenal survive scare to defeat QPR 2-1
Arsenal had to put up a spirited effort in their game against Queens Park Rangers to secure a hard-fought three points in their 2-1 victory at the Emirates on Boxing Day.
The Gunners were all over QPR in the London derby and the movements of Arsenal players troubled their opposition defenders, however the game's climax was different.
Alexis Sanchez yet again was the difference maker for Arsenal as his quality was evident in the match.
The Chilean won a penalty but his tame effort saw Robert Green go down to his right and keep out the kick.
However there was no stopping Sanchez as he headed in a Kieran Gibbs' cross to give the Gunners the lead.
Arsenal had another penalty appeal turned down when Nedum Onuoha bundled down Danny Welbeck in the box.
A moment of madness from Olivier Giroud saw him headbutt Onuoha in the second half, putting his team in a precarious situation.
However, Arsene Wenger's team got some respite when Tomas Rosicky pulled in another goal for the Gunners, making himself available in space to rifle in Sanchez's pass.
But then, Junior Hoilett won a contentious penalty for QPR, with Charlie Austin stepping up to reduce the deficit for his team.
It set up a nervy ending as QPR pushed for an equaliser, and were unlucky not to have been awarded another penalty when Bobby Zamora was fouled in the box.
But the Gunners held on tightly to secure the win and will next travel to West Ham for another London derby on Sunday.
