THE ancient town of Ile-Ife, Osun State stood still, yesterday, as dignitaries across the world came in droves for the burial of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who joined his ancestors July 28 but who was officially pronounced dead only on Wednesday.
For the second day, commercial activities were grounded to a halt as all shops, stalls, banks and markets were closed down in honour of the highly revered monarch.
At the venue of the inter religious service organised for the monarch, notable people  started trooping in as early as 8am.

Ridgeway, best known for her turn in the 1972 Bronson movie “The Mechanic,” said she was attacked by Cosby a year earlier when she went to talk to him about her career.

“His attack was fast with surgical precision and surprise on his side,” she said. “I couldn’t breathe. I was in shock.”

Cosby, she said, forced her to perform oral sex and afterward she felt like “a small animal that had been hit by a car.”

Naira drops to 224 as dollar demand rises

The naira dropped against the dollar at the parallel market on Tuesday driven by demand mainly from individuals travelling abroad for summer holidays and importers, traders said.

The local currency was quoted at 224 to the greenback at the black market, 0.89 per cent weaker than 222 it was sold on Monday, Reuters reported.

At the official interbank market, the naira closed at 197, a level it has been stuck at following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s peg on the exchange rate in February.

“We’ve seen a surge in dollar demand … since Friday,” a Nigerian Bureaux de Change operator, Harrison Owoh, said, adding that the CBN might sell dollars this week.

Owoh said the bank sold around $160m to BDCs last week to increase dollar supply.

BDCs are allowed to sell up to $4,000 as personal travelling allowance and $5,000 as business travelling allowance.

However, individuals sometimes buy above the stipulated dollar limit from the undocumented parallel market.

The naira had appreciated to 216 at the parallel market last week after banks stopped accepting hard currency cash deposits on CBN orders, fuelling excess dollar liquidity at the parallel market.

The central bank has also directed lenders to pay for dollars purchased at the official market 48 hours in advance, tightening naira liquidity.

Buhari is ‘born again’ phenomenon – Soyinka

ABUJA — Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has described President Muhammadu as a “born-again” phenomenon on the Nigerian political landscape, who is ready to make amends for his past mistakes.   Soyinka, who spoke in an interview with Zero Tolerance, a periodic publication by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, noted that Buhari has already paid some debts to the Nigerian community, describing him as a lucky man.  Soyinka noted that although Buhari has not come out openly to apologise for his wrong deeds in the past, he has nonetheless accepted the fact that he had made some mistakes.

ABUJA – President Mohammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria is erroneously being regarded as a rich country, stating that indices and parameters of evaluating a rich country such as economic advancement, improved social services were lacking.
He however enjoined the Nigerian elites to be prepared to make sacrifice to rescue the country.
The president spoke when he received the outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Dr. Donald Kaberuka and other officials of the bank.
According to him, the privileged and influential citizens clearly have to do more now than in the past to help the country deal successfully with its economic and security problems.
President Buhari also Kaberuka that his administration will welcome more support from the AfDB for projects in versatile sectors like agriculture that can easily be explored to create more jobs for unemployed Nigerians.
He said: “With the shock of falling oil prices, lack of revenues, and insecurity, the Nigerian elites must now wake up and provide the right guidance in their communities, and also lead the economy on the right path more than they used to do”.

Obasanjo stated this yesterday while hosting Kogi State governor, Capt. Idris Wada, at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
Obasanjo was the former Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to which wada belongs.
