It is shocking to announce that Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru died today November 29th in a South African hospital after a long battle with brain tumor. He was 66 years old.

The career diplomat served as Nigerian Minister from 2011 until 2013. He was also Nigeria's High Commissioner to South Africa. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

Overland plane from Abuja crash-lands in Ilorin...

An Overland plane carrying 59 passengers and 4 crew members crash landed this evening Saturday November 29th in Ilorin, Kwara state. The plane, coming from Abuja, was said to have overshot the runway after it landed.
Below is a statement from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, about the incident

"An Overland flight 1186, an ATR 72 aircraft with Registration number 5N-BPG from Abuja airport to Ilorin, carrying fifty nine passengers and four crew members,veered off the runway at low speed after a normal landing at the Ilorin Airport. The incident which occurred today Saturday, November 29, at 4.45pm, has no casualty recorded. However, the Accident and Prevention Bureau in conjunction with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the cause of the incident. The authority wishes to use this medium to reassure Nigerians that safety of the traveling public is still paramount and cannot be compromised.” the statement read...

Pope Prays In Istanbul Mosque In New Outreach: Photos

Great union as Pope Francis has taken part in a Muslim prayer alongside the Grand Mufti of Istanbul on the second leg of his three-day visit to Turkey. Francis stood on Saturday morning with his head bowed and hands clasped in front of him in a two minutes of silent prayer inside the 17th-century Sultan Ahmet mosque, aiming to show respect for Islam and encourage stronger ties between the two faiths.

63 senators back plan to impeach President Jonathan?

It is widely reported in Punch  that 63 senators as of yesterday Thursday November 27th have signed up to the plan to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan in the upper legislative chamber. 

They reported that one of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan in the Senate showed one of their correspondents the list containing the signatures of the senators. A source told the paper that 8 PDP senators were among the signatories to the planned impeachment notice. There are 109 members in the Senate.

A financier’s wife has been awarded £337 million in what could be Britain’s biggest ever divorce settlement ,but her legal team says she may appeal for more.

Sir Chris Hohn has been told to hand over the sum following the collapse of his 15-year marriage to Jamie Cooper-Hohn.Sir Chris’s representatives told the court they were anxious to ‘move on with things [but the] wife is not’.Sir Chris, who was born in Addlestone, Surrey, met his American wife, 49, when the pair studied at Harvard Business School.

She told an earlier hearing that she initially spurned his advances, but the pair later bonded over the film Malcolm X. 

They married in Washington DC in 1995 and had four children – triplets, now aged 12, and an older child of 15.They split up in December 2012, with Mrs Cooper-Hohn divorcing Sir Chris in April 2013

Mrs Cooper-Hohn said she should get half of the couple’s fortune because the wealth was created as a result of their ‘partnership’. Sir Chris said she should receive a quarter.

Mrs Cooper-Hohn claimed their joint assets were around £849 million – and added that her ex-husband was worth at least £872 million from personal assets and his hedge fund, for a combined total of £1.72billion. She said: 

‘When Chris and I first met, I asked him what he wanted to do. He said “I don’t mind as long as I make a lot of money”.’ 

However, Sir Chris,claimed he is worth a mere £67 million.He said

I learned very early on that you can’t take money with you and that it doesn’t bring happiness. The basis for my claim [to retain 75 per cent of the disputed fortune] is that I have created all the wealth through expertise, effort and sweat and blood.’

So Cruel as Housewife dumps day-old baby into toilet

 

Residents in Okpoko of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State were, on Thursday, shocked when the news broke that a housewife in the community, names withheld, had dumped her newborn baby into the toilet.

She was said to have a protruded stomach, a peculiar nature that made many people in the area, not to be aware that she was pregnant.She decided to dump the newborn baby into the toilet, to save her the agony of nursing a baby, which, she said, could disturb her business.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that when a member of the family, her brother-in-law, wanted to use the toilet, he discovered that water could not flush the waste, as his faeces remained floating.

As you read this, the Speaker of Kebbi House of Assembly, Hon. Habib Musa Jega has been impeached. And a man, Hon. Mohammed Shalla Gwandu has been sworn-in by the clerk of the House, Shehu Usman Randali, as the new Speaker.
The impeachment, which took place around 10:25pm at the House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi was signed by 16 members out of 24 members of the House.

Femi Kuti is upset and sad at the moment. According to a DNA test recently carried out by the father of 5 on his children, shows two of them, Dupe and Tosin are not his. Out of his alleged five children: Made, Afolabi, Dupe, Tosin and Ayomide, two of them, Dupe and Tosin (a boy and a girl) have been discovered not to be his biological children, according to a recent DNA test.  He confessed being disappointed and pained that a woman can actually give someone what does not belong to him.

NAFDAC Workers Put Strike on Hold

Medical and health workers under the aegis of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has suspended their 16-day old strike. Tribune reports.

Chairman of the Federal Area Council, MHWU, Mr Steven Ibe, called on all staff of NAFDAC to resume work on Monday, December 1, saying the strike was suspended to pave the way for the three-man committee set up by the Federal Government to look into the salary issues and come up with a satisfactory salary structure for the workers.

He, however, noted that the JOHESU strike would continued indefinitely, as, according to him, the Federal Government had remained unyielding at addressing the issues surrounding the union’s strike.
The union leader also warned NAFDAC management not to victimise any of its staff over their roles in the strike. “This is part of the agreement reached at the Wednesday meeting,” he said.

A 54 year old Chinese businessman Xiong Shuihua did something amazing for the community where he grew up in Xinyu, Southern China. He paid to bulldoze all the wooden huts in the area then spent millions replacing them with an estate of luxury flats for the residents.

'2 Out of Every 3 Nigerian US Visa Applicants Get Approved' - US Embassy Consular Chief

he US embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos say that received more than 220,000 non-immigrant visa applications between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014, and of this number, 143,000 were approved.

Stacie Hankins, the consular chief of the embassy said this while speaking to journalists about new visa procedures on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013, the embassy in Abuja and consulate in Lagos received more than 182,000 non-immigrant visa applications, the majority of which were approved.

“Between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014, we received more than 220,000 applications. Again, the majority of those applications were approved.
“We hope that Nigerians’ desire to visit our beautiful country will continue to grow. “And we look forward to working with our partners to allow qualified tourists and business travelers to do so,” she said.
