Drug Smugglers Busted At Us Border By Disguising Weed As Carrots
According to Newsweek, Drug smugglers trying to sneak thousands of pounds of weed disguised as carrots into the United States were sniffed out by authorities this weekend—though they demonstrated "creativity" in the attempted smuggling, officials said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted 2,493 pounds of “alleged marijuana,” which was found hidden among a commercial shipment of fresh carrots in a tractor-trailer traveling from Mexico. The shipment was discovered during a search at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility, located near the U.S. border with Mexico in southeastern Texas—around 250 miles south of San Antonio.

“Once again, drug smuggling organizations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Efrain Solis Jr., port director of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “Our officers are always ready to meet those challenges and remain vigilant toward any type of illicit activities.”

Wenger vexed as Arsenal squander title momentum
Arsene Wenger couldn’t conceal his frustration after Arsenal’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Liverpool saw the Gunners waste an opportunity to consolidate their position at the top of the Premier League.
But Wenger claimed Wednesday’s thrilling contest at Anfield underlined his team’s title credentials as he challenged his players to use their disappointment as a motivation for a first English crown in 12 years.
After chief rivals Manchester City were held at home to Everton, the Arsenal manager saw Joe Allen’s last-minute equaliser cost his team two points to leave them ahead of second placed Leicester only on goal difference.
“I am frustrated by the result and not disappointed by the performance, even if we started a bit apprehensively,” said Wenger.
“The frustration comes from the fact that at 3-2 we had three situations when we could have made it 4-2 and made a bad decision.
“That was a frustration for me but that can happen in England but overall a game between two teams who gave absolutely everything. Look at the results tonight it showed everywhere is even.
“I feel they need to transform that frustration into more motivation for the next game because there are more positives than negatives tonight.
“What happened tonight strengthened my belief we can have a big part to play in this league.”

State of the Union: Barack Obama sells optimism to nervous nation
Obama paints a picture of a country on the rebound, empowered by its ethnic diversity and infused with possibility
He criticizes foes' descriptions of ISIS' influence in the U.S.
Washington (CNN)—With one eye on a sudden crisis with Iran, President Barack Obama on Tuesday urged Americans in his final State of the Union address to reject the politics of tribalism and fear that have rocked the campaign to find his successor and to come together to build a nation that was "clear-eyed, big-hearted" and "optimistic."m
Delivering his annual report to the nation, Obama did not name Republican 2016 candidates, but took clear, implied shots at them nevertheless, particularly front-runner Donald Trump, as well as Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, as he sought to shape the 2016 electoral battlefield for his Democrats and argued that America's destiny was in doubt because of a political system festering in malice, gridlock and in the grip of the rich and the powerful.
Obama also took aim at critics who accuse him of weakening American power abroad and Republicans who say he is underplaying the threat from radical Islamist groups such as ISIS. He mocked the contention that fighters on "on the back of pickup trucks and twisted souls plotting in apartments or garages" represented an existential threat to America.
The President acknowledged that a torrent of change, technological advances and economic dislocation had left many Americans fearful of the future and anxious as social structures that have underpinned the life of the nation for decades fray. But he urged them not to fall prey to the a periodic temptation that has emerged throughout history to alienate minorities and resist social change.
"Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change, promising to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control," Obama said. "And each time, we overcame those fears."
"We made change work for us, always extending America's promise outward, to the next frontier, to more and more people. And because we did -- because we saw opportunity where others saw only peril -- we emerged stronger and better than before."
Economic opportunity, security and a sustainable, peaceful planet are possible, he said, if the country could return to "rational, constructive debates."
"It will only happen if we fix our politics," he said.
While Obama avoided the long list of legislative proposals that Congress has no intention of taking up, he strongly defended his domestic record, claiming credit for 14 million new jobs and a halving of the unemployment rate. He said those who claimed the economy was in decline are "peddling fiction."
He rebuked politicians who draw congressional districts to protect safe seats and vowed to launch a national effort to secure voting rights, an issue particularly important to minority communities. And he named Vice President Joe Biden, who lost his beloved son Beau to cancer last year, to head "Mission Control" in a new "moon shot" to cure the disease. He told conservatives who deny climate change to "have at it" because they were defying the world.
Obama also gave an undertaking to fight to close the war on terror camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, renewing one of the first promises of his presidency which has been thwarted by Congress. He called the facility a "recruitment brochure for our enemies and was expensive and unnecessary.

Half of South Sudan children 'not in school' because of conflict
According to BBC, More than half of children in South Sudan are not in school, the highest proportion in any country, UN children's agency Unicef has said.
Government forces have been battling rebels for the past two years, although a peace deal was signed in August.
Niger is a close second, with 47% unable to attend school, followed by Sudan (41%) and Afghanistan (40%).
Worldwide, some 24 million children of more than 109 million living in nations at war are not in school, Unicef said.
Even before the conflict began, 1.4 million children were already missing class in South Sudan, Unicef said.
Since the war broke out, more than 800 schools have been demolished and more than 400,000 children had to abandon their classrooms, the agency said.
Despite the peace agreement, violence persists in some areas.
Only one in 10 South Sudanese students who enter school finish primary education amid a shortage of facilities and trained teachers, said Phuong T Nguyen, Unicef's chief of education for South Sudan.
"There is a very, very low budget from the government to the education sector," she said. "It is not holding steady and we see a decline."
Enrolment went up from under 30% after South Sudan became independent in 2011, but the war and a lack of school buildings and qualified teachers have slowed the growth, according to a South Sudanese official, the AP news agency reports.

It Was An Epic As Newcastle Played 3-3 With Man U
Paul Dummett's late strike rescued a point for Newcastle as Manchester United missed the chance to go level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham.
It was a remarkable end to a game that had seen the away side lead twice.
Wayne Rooney's penalty and Jesse Lingard's finish put them 2-0 up before Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic's penalty levelled the scores.
Rooney's second looked to have won it for Louis van Gaal's side but Dummett salvaged the draw in the last minute.
The point earned is not enough to lift Newcastle out of the bottom three - they remain a point and place behind 17th-placed Swansea - but it represents another notable improvement following three successive 1-0 league defeats.
For Louis van Gaal's side, it will represent two points lost and a step backwards after back-to-back Premier League and FA Cup victories had offered improvement on a winless December.

If You Want A Great Partner Choose A Book Lover
According to a 2006 study in Europe people who read fiction regularly show better social skills and empathy compared to those who don’t read much or those who read non-fiction. Something to do with reading fiction is like dating thousands of different characters. And this is corroborated by two separate studies by Raymond Mar and Keith Oakley, two Canadian professors who drew the conclusion that fiction readers are able to better stay in the moment, are more compassionate and make better lovers. If you want a good lover, forget the local bars and clubs. It’s time to hang out at the book store and library. Let’s explore more as to why.

Saraki storm's Aso rock over missing Budget
In an apparent moves to douse tension emanated from missing budget, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday 12 January, 2016 stormed the Presidential Villa to hold a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu over the sudden disappearance of the 2016 Budget from the National Assembly.
Saraki, who came out from the President’s office about 30 minutes after his arrival, declined to speak to press men on the allegedly missing 2016 Budget proposal.
When Journalists asked about the suspicious disappearance of the Budget, Saraki refused to comment, but exclaimed “Ha, ha, ha,” and jumped into his vehicle.
Saraki’s vehicle immediately speed off from the forecourt of the Presidential Villa without him clearing the air on the Budget controversy.
The news of the missing budget is coming less than 24 hours after Buhari had an expanded meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the presidential Villa on Monday 11th January, 2016.
However, top chieftains of the party were not present during the meeting, hence signifying palpable tension in the party.
The National Assembly is expected to begin work on Tuesday, on the Budget proposal which was presented to the lawmakers by President Buhari on December 22 last year.

Reasons Why Sex Is Important And Expected
Sex is an important aspect of every relationship – sometimes even more important than we would dare to admit. Are you with me on that? Now, I have to say that I am a very romantic person and that, for me, emotions do come first. However, even the most romantic ones do need a reality check from time to time, to remind us that we’re don’t have a soul only but a body too, and that we deserve to have both of them fed properly. Emotions will feed your soul, food will keep the body functioning, but there’s one thing that can feed them both at once – sex. So here’s some good reasons to engage in this activity tonight!
1. It’s a Stress Relief
Similar to other pleasurable activities and chocolate, sex makes our bodies produce happy hormones. It is a scientifically proved fact that couples who have a lot of stress practice this act of intimacy less often. So, let your troubles aside and plan a romantic evening followed by this mood lifting activity. Why not? It will help you forget all those problems, you’ll fall asleep like a baby and you’ll have enough energy to face the next day feeling happy and rejuvenated.
2. It’s an Emotional Process
Yes, it is a physical activity but most #men and women agree that there’s much more to it than just seeing stars and losing calories as a bonus. You see, there’s a good reason why “having sex” is often replaced with “being intimate with somebody”. Sex starts with romance and ends with romance because both genders feel the need to cuddle after it. Furthermore, healthy sex life is a confidence boost for both genders – it proves that partners are still very much interested in all aspects of their relationship. Did you know, for example, that couples who have sex often, demonstrate more feelings? They feel the need to touch, kiss and hug more often and have fewer problems with demonstrating this lovey-dovey behavior in public. You know why? Because sex makes the body produce more oxytocin, a hormone that makes us feel the need to love and trust somebody.
3. It Keeps Our Lady Hormones Balanced
A night of passion can do much more than put a smile on a lady’s #face. You see, being sexually active actually means producing more estrogen. And we all know what happens when your #body stops producing this female hormone in optimal amount! Practicing your lovemaking skills at least once a week delays menopause symptoms, regulates menstrual cycle and increases fertility. Now, isn’t that one great reason to throw yourself on that sexy #man of yours?
4. It Reduces the Risk of Cancer
#Everything can cause cancer these days! Active smoking, passive smoking, deodorants, paints and even some clothes! Luckily, there’s one thing you can do to help prevent both breast and prostate cancer – engage in some ol’ fashioned horizontal gymnastics!
5. It Helps You to Live Longer
Sex rejuvenates, heals wounds, makes you more flexible and less prone to various illnesses. It’s a metabolism and immunity booster, reduces the risk of stroke and fights the aging process too! Add that positive, happy, sexy feeling your weekly supply of “Big O’s” will give you and you’ve just got yourself a perfect anti-aging method no lab could ever produce, bottle or sell!

Why we’ve not arrested Jonathan — EFCC boss
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC explained, yesterday, why it has not arrested former President Goodluck Jonathan following startling revelations on how the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki (retd) allegedly disbursed over $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase to various individuals.

Ibrahim Magu
Alarmed by the revelations, the National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has, however, asked Dr Jonathan to speak out.
This came as the anti-graft commission disclosed that one of the beneficiaries, the former Military Administrator of Kaduna State, Mr. Jafaru Isah had returned N100m out of the N170m he collected and was given administrative bail to source for the balance of N70m.
Another beneficiary, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and leader of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Chief Olu Falae however insisted that he would not refund the N100 million he collected from Chief Tony Anenih, which was said to have come from Dasuki.
Facts have also emerged how former Chairman of Board of Trustees, BoT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih and Chief Olu Falae entered into a working relationship prior to the 2015 presidential election.
Explaining why the former president has not been arrested while speaking with online news publishers yesterday, in Lagos, the EFCC boss, Mr Ibrahim Magu said that no document has been traced to Jonathan giving any approval for the disbursement of the money for any purpose other than arms purchase.

Roadmap to Successful Change By Pastor Tunde Bakare
Pastor Tunde Bakare, serving Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, has outlined the road map to a successful change in Nigeria.
Tunde Bakare.jpg
Bakare gave the outline at his church in his State of the Nation Broadcast aired live on Africa Independent Television, AIT, and some radio stations on Sunday in Lagos.
He said, “we cannot re-arrange the old and label it as new. We have to act differently to create the new Nigeria''.
''We must change our way of thinking and doing things. We must change our governance structure because the present system is wasteful; we must change our grand norm; and we must change our cash-and-carry judicial and legislative system''.
He said it was absolutely abhorrent a situation where the legislature corners 25 percent of the recurrent expenditure of the nation’s budget at the expense of the vast majority of other citizens.
He said for 16 years politicians fed fat on the nation’s resources and left the crumbs for the ordinary people.
Pastor Bakare acknowledged that these are trying times for the country in terms of insecurity and economic downturn, adding that things are so bad that most of the 36 states are not viable and cannot pay salaries of workers.
He said things are, however, shaping up, with the current war against corruption, efforts to diversify the economy, introduction of single treasury account (STA), reforms in the petroleum industry, infrastructure agenda, etc.
He called for economic diversification in a manner that would empower states to manage their own resources.
Quoting the scriptures copiously, he said without restructuring, the nation cannot attain economic progress, adding that the solution to subsidy on imported petroleum products is to have optimally functional refineries.
Pastor Bakare also called on state governors not to reduce minimum wage but should rather reduce their security votes to enable them pay salaries.
He said Nigeria needs a truly federal state, adding that the 2014 National Conference report should be adopted as a blueprint for Nigeria’s development.
“The 2014 National Conference Report is not a PDP document. It is a Nigerian document. Its contents tally with the manifesto of the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
He called for the adoption of the Dubai economic development model where mega cities emerged through the creation of economic hubs, adding that this could be replicated in Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
Pastor Bakare, who was President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate during the 2011 presidential election, said Nigeria is currently undergoing transition after which the country would undergo economic revolution, reformation and transformation in that order.
He recommended what he called the 3Ds to the Federal Government, which are Deregulation, Diversification, and Devolution, adding that “only those who dare drive the world forward. It is time to feed our faith and stab our fears to death. Change is possible. Nigeria can, and Nigeria will change for the better.”
After the broadcast that lasted over an hour, he asked the congregation to pray for Nigeria and pray for themselves to change and for them to witness the impending change in the country in their lifetime.

Opinion: Amaechi’s Loot Bought Nigerian Writers For APC And Buhari $1 Million ‘Bribe’- Ikhide
Ikhide Ikheloa is a writer and literary critic has published his latest opinion piece for THE TRENT Online Newspaper.
Ikhide.jpg
Until systems of accountability are installed in Nigeria, we will all continue to make noise until we are exhausted. Nothing will ever happen.
President Muhammadu Buhari is the latest clueless leader to take impunity to impossible levels. He and his party of arrogance and ignorance personified (the APC) are bankrolled by loot and the wall of intellectual halitosis eagerly supplied by willing intellectuals and writers.
Our writers and thinkers have become the problem, helping to loot at night and writing syrupy nonsense in the daytime. Go home, no one cares.
So, stop asking about the $500,000 that “Minister” Rotimi Amaechi spent on a 3-hour dinner for Professor Wole Soyinka. That investigation will not see the light of day.
Amaechi emptied the state’s coffers into Buharo’s ambition, nothing will happen to him.
Stop asking how much was spent each year by Amaechi on the annual Port Harcourt Book festival. We will never know if that was also a front to launder and loot state money because our writers and Ph.Ds do not care about such inconvenient facts. They just want their share.
Stop asking about the $1 million that some powerful writer inserted in Buhari’s budget for the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), a country club for old writers with no charter, no constitution, no membership, no proof of doing anything tangible for any writer anywhere, not to talk of Nigeria.
I did write to Denja Abdullahi, president of ANA and I was met with rude silence. If you don’t care for the looting of one million dollars, why should you even bother writing books? Why bother being an association of writers if you would not be bothered to respond to simple questions about your affairs? We are taking about public funds here. No one cares.
Mr. Buhari is arresting people up and down the political landscape because he sees personal enemies everywhere, his anti-corruption war is a witch-hunt, otherwise many of his ministers would be in jail or elsewhere. Do our writers and Ph.Ds care? Hell no. They are being paid.
This is my point: African writing is impotent; one struggles to understand the point of its being. Much of the writing does nothing for the continent, save state the obvious. Indeed, it is the case that many times, African writers are the greedy vuvuzelas of Africa’s statesmen turned executioners, loudly and lustily painting lipstick on the rotten corpses of promises. It is easy to understand why many Africans do not read literature. Why bother? What has it done for us lately?
Dear African intellectual: The single story lives because you do nothing about the single story you write about relentlessly. It is really all about you, screw Africa. Literally, yes, screw Africa. Screw you and your silly little novels. Screw you and your silly little “investigations” into the dark side of dark black Africa.
Screw you and your silly little NGOs that empower you in collaboration with silly racist liberals who think creatures like you are cute little pretend humans to be parted on the head and given pocket change.

Arms probe: SERAP sends an open letter to Jonathan
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has sent an open letter to former President Goodluck Jonathan seeking explanations from him on what he knew on the diversion and sharing of over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram.
Dasuki-Sambo-jonathanSERAP’s Executive Director, Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, in a letter, which read in part, said: “SERAP is sending you this open letter to seek explanations from you, as former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, on what you knew, or had reason to know on the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant to purchase arms to empower Nigerian soldiers to fight Boko Haram.
“SERAP considers that there is enough material in the public domain to suggest that over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms to equip Nigerians soldiers fighting Boko Haram in the North East of the country was diverted and shared among high-ranking government and party officials under your watch as President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces.
“SERAP and indeed Nigerians reserve the right to pursue justice through appropriate national and international accountability mechanisms to ensure that everyone involved in this heinous crime is brought to justice in accordance with international standards of fairness.
“Is it correct to suggest that the budget of over $2 billion to purchase arms for Nigerian soldiers fighting Boko Haram in the North-East of the country was authorised by you or your office? In other words, did your former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) seek your approval to collect from the Central Bank of Nigeria the over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms for Nigerian soldiers?
“If so, Nigerians would like to hear from you whether the apparent diversion and sharing of our commonwealth by your former NSA was expressly or implicitly authorised by you.
“Is it then correct to suggest that the former NSA implements presidential decisions and not make them? If so, is it also correct to suggest that the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms was a presidential-level decision and that you signed off on it?
“Is it not correct to suggest that your administration acted on the basis that it was essentially unrestrained by international or Nigerian law in engaging in or encouraging the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant to purchase arms for Nigerian soldiers in order to protect them against attacks from Boko Haram and to enhance their ability to defend the territorial integrity of the country and provide security for its citizens?”
“Assuming you did not directly order or authorise the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant to purchase arms for Nigerian soldiers, is it fair to suggest that you at least knew, or had reason to know, that your own former NSA was apparently involved in the heinous crime of corruption to wit: the diversion and sharing of over $2 billion meant to purchase arms for Nigerian soldiers; and did not take all necessary and reasonable measures in your power as Commander-in-Chief and President to prevent the alleged diversion and sharing of our commonwealth, as explained above?
“Would you accept that the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion was largely due to your failure to ensure: (1) that system was in place to ensure a transparent and accountable spending of budget for military operations in strict accordance with the standards of international law including the UN Convention against Corruption; (2) that any such system was operating in a continuous and effective manner; and (3) that violations of the standards were punished when detected by that system?
“After the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion was brought to your attention, did you take any step to refer your former NSA and all those involved in the diversion and sharing to appropriate anticorruption agencies to ensure that all those who were alleged to be responsible for this heinous crime of corruption are brought to justice?
“Would you agree that the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms for Nigerian soldiers has seriously undermined the ability of the soldiers to defend themselves and fight Boko Haram; resulted in some soldiers being unfairly tried for refusing to fight without being provided with necessary arms; inflicted severe pain or suffering; and caused unnecessary loss of lives and displacement of law-abiding citizens?
“Would SERAP be correct to suggest that you, as President and Commander-in-Chief, knew about the authorization, apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion meant to purchase arms for Nigerian soldiers, in the chain of command involving your former NSA and others?
“Would it therefore be correct to further suggest that your acts and/or omissions concerning the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $ 2 billion were such as to give rise to personal liability through command responsibility for the actions of your former NSA and others who worked under you?
“Would you now, on the basis of the above, apologise to Nigerians for the apparent diversion and sharing of the over $2 billion and the catastrophic consequences for Nigerian soldiers and their families, including those who have lost their lives; those unfairly tried and convicted; and millions of displaced Nigerians?
“Nigerians are eagerly awaiting your clarifications on the issues raised above, and your apology.”

APC Blasts PDP For Attacking PMB's Anti Graft War
The APC asked the anti-corruption agencies to ignore the attacks of the opposition party PDP
against the anti-graft war of the Pres. Buhari's government.
In a statement by the National Secretary of the APC, Mai Mala Buni on Saturday, it stated that the APC was aware of the plan by PDP and their agents to dismantle the efforts of the present administration over the ongoing corruption cases that is being investigated.
Buni said that the APC is asking anti-corruption agencies not to be distracted by attacks from the PDP and that the present govt will continue to employ all legal means to bring to book all looters to book.
He said:
“It is clear that the PDP is out of sync and out of step with the generality of Nigerians on the clamour to bring to book all looters of public funds. The days of impunity are over.
“We state that the PDP and their agents do not have the luxury of dictating how the present administration and anti-corruption agencies carries out its legitimate duty of catching looters of public funds, as long as it conforms with the rule of law.”

You Want Mr. Right When You Are Miss. Wrong "
The basic fundamental principle in relationship is the ability to follow the rules. Most times when you see a single lady and you engage her in a conversation on why she is not married, they often give many reasons but one that has most times formed their argument is that they have not seen ''Mr right''. When you probe further on what qualifies a man as Mr right? Then you are in for an answer that could rival any essay in a WAEC exam. You will such things as he must be tall, handsome, rich, treat me like a queen, must not be a cheat, and others to numerous to mention.
As they say, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, many women want MR. RIGHT but are MISS WRONG. Equity demands that since you want Mr. Right, you should also be "Miss right" of strive to be one in order to strike a balance when you both finally meet or even to be ahead of other women in getting married.
Sadly enough, many women are "Miss Wrong". They don't have what it takes to be married. They want to get married but they still keep more than one man, many of these Mr right seeking ladies can't cook, clean the home, and do laundry. They lack rudimentary elements of how to make a successful home. A friend of mine just parted ways with a certain lady who each time she cooks, the oil used in preparing such meal will be enough to cook three different types of food. He has tried to teach her, but it appears there's no success in sight.
Some of these women have not improved themselves over the years to make a man consider them for marriage. Many over eat themselves and get unnecessarily fat and ugly, what to them is beauty is to fix all the artificialities of this world and engage in frivolous spending on irrelevant things. Some ladies, their wardrobe alone can start three boutiques in their street of which none of the money used in buying those things was sourced by them.
A lady that is up to marriage age should have something doing and has weaned herself off different bad characters. You don't expect to married to a Mr right and you are Miss wrong yourself are expecting to go and pollute his rightness or complement it. Will it be fair to be Miss wrong and you expect Mr right?
