Four Nigerians Win British Parliament Seats

Four Nigerians have won seats in the British parliament to represent their constituencies.
Chuka Harrison Umunna, Helen Grant, Chi Onwurah and Kate Osamor won the seats in the general elections.
Umunna is a member of the British Labour Party and has been a member of Parliament (MP) since 2010.
He is from Nigerian Igbo ethnic group and the current Shadow Business Secretary since 2011.
Another Nigerian, Grant, a lawyer, born on September 1961, won her seat under the British Conservative Party.
She is the current Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald in Kent and the current Minister for Sport, Tourism & Equalities.

In a press release to the general public, Ondo State Government has been able to curtail the further spread of a strange ailment that broke out in Ode-Irele which was discovered to have been caused by methanol poison in locally made alcohol.
Briefing Journalists at the conference hall of the state Ministry of Health, the Commissioner, Dr. ‘Dayo Adeyanju, said that no new case of the ailment has been recorded in the last two weeks.
According to Adeyanju, 23 people died from the outbreak and out of the ten victims still alive and receiving treatment, two have regained their sights while four other are partially blind.
He added that government is continuing the sensitization of the people of Ode-Irele and it’s environs on avoiding the consumption of the poisoned alcohol.

Adeyanju further informed that the ministry officials are working with the National Agency for Foods, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ensure the local alcohol are of good quality.

May 29 Transition: PDP tackles Buhari over promises

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, APC, for alleging that the Presidency has bluntly refused to cooperate with it in ensuring a successful transition of power on May 29.
The PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, asked APC to put its house in order and stop being boastful and arrogant.
He said that APC was already in trouble over sharing of political offices and repeatedly asked them to “put your house in order.”
Metuh’s statement came against the backdrop of reports about simmering dispute over the sharing of political offices in the APC which could tear the party apart.
According to the sources, the leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is said to be battling some powerful northerners over the zoning of political offices in the party.

UK elections: Jonathan congratulates Cameron on victory

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Prime Minister David Cameron and the Conservative Party of Great Britain on their victory in the country’s general elections.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati quoted the president as saying that as Prime Minister Cameron and the Conservative Party prepare to form a new British Government backed by the clear majority in Parliament, he assured them of the best wishes of the Government and people of Nigeria.

“The President expects that the historic relationship between Nigeria and Britain which received a significant boost during the past five years of his Presidency in Nigeria and Mr. Cameron’s first term in office, will continue to blossom in coming years for the benefit of both countries and their citizens.

“President Jonathan particularly hopes that both countries will continue to strengthen current bilateral cooperation between them in critical areas such as the fight against insurgency and terrorism, education, trade, infrastructure and the achievement of Nigeria’s development targets.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Thursday listed his many accomplishments while celebrating 2,900 days in office.

The Governor also begged for forgiveness from those he had wronged.

The Lagos government, since inception, has always reviewed its activities every 100 days and the 29th edition, which held on Thursday, is the last of such under Fashola, whose tenure will end in the next 21 days.

Fashola said that he was called upon to take decisions in the morning, afternoon and sometimes late in the night and he took the decisions based on the information made available to him. He said that his decisions were always made in the best interest of the state, though some people might have felt hurt in the process.

ABUJA—The Supreme Court, yesterday, threw a spanner into proposed plans by the National Assembly to override the President’s veto on amendments to the constitution achieved by the assembly and endorsed by the state houses of assembly.
In a ruling, a seven-man panel of justices of the apex court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, ordered the lawmakers to maintain status quo on the matter until June 18.
The ruling by the Supreme Court follows reservations by the legislators on the president’s veto of the alterations in which he said the National Assembly overreached itself in the alterations.

The Senate had in response to the President’s action demanded that the President return the original bill including the signature page on it. The Senate move was in response to assertions by the lawmakers that the President had actually signed the bill but reversed himself subsequently.
While Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, expressed bewilderment over the ruling, another senior lawyer, Emeka Ngige, SAN, and a former lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammmed faulted the National Assembly for overreaching itself in the proposed amendments.

It is unclear what venue the event would be held at, though Stephanie Smith of the New York Post reported the MGM Grand is backing away from hosting the potential rematch:

The proposed rematch of the welterweights was going to be timed to the opening of the MGM Grand’s new $375 million, 20,000-seat arena in May 2016. The first big event at the venue will be a concert by an unspecified artist, and the Mayweather-Pacquiao matchup would have come next.
But now Vegas insiders say that the hotel giant’s backing away from the idea because the fight—while pulling in unprecedented millions—underwhelmed fans and was a logistical nightmare.

Lagos Guber Poll : Jimi Agbaje Drags Ambode To Tribunal Over Election Results

According to reports by Pulse, PDP Governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje who congratulated his opponent, Akinwunmi Ambode, APC, for winning the governorship election in Lagos State has dragged the APC candidate to court.

A close source revealed that “Agbaje’s lawyers filed the case on Thursday”

The petitioners in the case are Agbaje and the PDP while the respondents are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ambode, APC and the INEC REC for Lagos State, Akin Orebiyi.

The source also revealed that PDP insiders forced Agbaje to take the case to court.

“He already accepted the result but they [PDP] convinced him to challenge it”– the source added.

There have been more revelations than the discoveries show. We are learning more about the forest. Some work needs to be done to ascertain where those rescued are from and possibly how they got t0 the forest which has been the dreaded base of the terrorists who hold North East hostage, and account for most of the bomb attacks in Nigerian cities as far as Abuja and parts in Kogi State.

Revealed! The Cabal of Major Oil Import And Fuel Subsidy Recipients

Oando Oil, CONOIL, African Petroleum and MRS Oil are among the powerful players in the petroleum sector that have shared over N3.655 trillion between 2006 and September 2011 in pursuit of importation of refined petroleum products.

This was revealed in Abuja by the Nigerian Senate joint Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Appropriation and Finance.
Senator Magnus Abe, the chairman of the committee, also disclosed that some 100 companies in the downstream sector and in construction, shared over N1.426 trillion between January and August 2011 alone.

Oando Oil is owned by Wale Tinubu’s Oando; Mike Adenuga owns CONOIL, Femi Otedola owns AP, while MRS Oil is run by Aliko Dangote's brother, Sayyu Dantata. Other key players named today include Pinaccle Construction Ltd, as well as Integrated Oil and Gas, which is owned by a former Minister of the Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho.

Neither the Warriors nor Grizzlies really felt good about the way they played. The difference is the Warriors did what they usually do at home: take care of business - and comfortably, too.

Stephen Curry had 22 points and seven assists, and the Warriors wore down undermanned Memphis in a 101-86 victory in Sunday's series opener.

''I think now we've got the cobwebs out of our offensive game. We should be able to build some momentum,'' Curry said.

Curry has won the NBA's Most Valuable Player award, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league has not released the voting results.

Manny Pacquiao fought with injured right shoulder, denied shot in locker room

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao threw fewer punches than Floyd Mayweather, 435-429, which few observers could have predicted.

But Pacquiao's camp is claiming he had a right shoulder injury that he suffered three to four weeks before the fight. He had taken anti-inflammatory shots that were approved by the United States Anti-Doping Agency during camp. He requested to take a shot after arriving in his locker room shortly after 6 p.m. PT, but was denied by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Trainer Freddie Roach said the injury occurred when Pacquiao threw a right hand during camp approximately a month ago. There was no doctor available to explain the injury, but Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said it was the same injury that Lakers star Kobe Bryant suffered that ended his 2014-2015 season.

FOLLOWING—THE latest rescue of additional 234 women and children by the Nigerian Army from the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, indicated, yesterday, that a sizeable number of the rescued girls were visibly pregnant, even as unofficial reports put the latest number of pregnant girls in one of the camps in Borno as at last Saturday at 214.

Giving this indication in Lagos, Executive Director, UNFPA, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, also disclosed that in the last one year, the organization had taken deliveries of over 16,000 pregnancies in the troubled North East part of the country.

Osotimehin, while giving update of the response to the rehabilitation of the rescued women and children, said the organization, in anticipation of the magnitude of the problem on hand, had put in place a formidable team in collaboration with the Federal and state governments, to first restore the dignity of the girls, who, he said, are facing severe psychosocial trauma.

Nigeria’s fortunes at the IAAF World Relays in the Bahamas took an up swing with the women 4x200m snatching the gold in a dramatic final, staged in the early hours of Sunday.

Okagbare started for the Nigerian quartet, she did well to stay close to the event’s defending champions, the USA who took a commanding lead from the start. They were on course for another win, but disaster overwhelmed the American ladies at the final changeover.
Janeba Tarmon and Allyson Felix failed to reach an understanding, it ended with Felix crashing to the floor. Regina Geroge, Dominique Duncan and Christy Udoh made no such mistake, they coasted home to victory at 1.30.52 seconds to win the 50,000 dollars at stake also set a new national record. Jamaica finished a distant second in 1:31.73, one-and-a-half seconds slower than their time from last year, but one place higher on the podium.
Germany were third in 1:33.61 while China set an Asian record of 1:34.89 in fourth.
“I am very delighted with the performance of our Women winning the 4x200m relay in a World leading time of 1:30.52s ahead of all the leading nations – USA, Jamaica, Bahamas, France, Germany, China and Ireland. I had said it before now that we can rely on these women to showcase our prowess in the Relays and they have not disappointed us,” Athletics Federation of Nigeria technical director Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama stated.

Oxford student revealed how she was raped by two men

An Oxford student who was raped by two men who then threw her in a bin has revealed her story as part of a campaign against sexual assault.

The #NotGuilty campaign was launched last week when Ione Wells, a student at Keble College at the University of Oxford, wrote an open letter to a 17-year-old who sexually assaulted her outside her London home. This was published in student newspaper Cherwell.

The brave 20-year-old waived her right to anonymity to describe in harrowing detail the attack that happened as she walked home in Camden, north London, after getting the last train.

Troops rescue more hostages, fate of Chibok girls uncertain

Nigeria troops have freed some 700 women and children from Boko Haram’s Sambisa forest stronghold over the past week, but uncertainty remained on Saturday over the fate of 219 girls seized from their school in Chibok last year in a kidnapping that sparked global outrage.
In the latest rescue, “234 women and children were rescued through the Kawuri and Konduga end of Sambisa forest on Thursday,” the defence headquarters said in a statement late Friday.
“They have been evacuated to join others at the place of ongoing screening,” it said, adding that the latest batch was “in addition to the previous individuals earlier rescued during the ongoing operation in the area.”
Around 500 women and children have already been freed by the military from the Islamists in the past few days.
The military said the “assault on the forest is continuing from various fronts and efforts are concentrated on rescuing hostages of civilians and destroying all terrorists camps and facilities in the forest.”
Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman told AFP Saturday the hostages were freed without much resistance.

According to the package, Jonathan, who will hand over to the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29, is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary. This is aside other constitutional allowances or entitlement that may accrue to him.
