Although the Nigerian High Court in Lagos orders DSTV to suspends its increase in subscription fee which is still in review.

The government of South Africa has pleaded with Nigeria and other nations in Africa affected by the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country. ECOWAS has condemned the attacks and demanded urgent actions from the South African government.

Huge debts await Buhari, in-coming govs

AFTER the euphoria of their electoral victories, one of the major challenges that will confront the President-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), and 20 or 21 new governors is the level of debt stock the out-going administrations will leave behind.
According to the Debt Management Office, DMO, the Federal Government has a stock of $6.445 billion in external debt (N1.29 trillion at the rate of one dollar to N200)) and another N7. 9 trillion domestic debt totalling N9.19 trillion, as of December 31, 2014. This is the equivalent of two years budget.
The huge debt stock, if not properly managed, can hamper the delivery of democracy dividends.

14 killed! Exhume corpse is connected to Strange illness in Ondo state

Yesterday, we heard about a strange illness in a community in Ondo state that has killed at least people who woke up blind, with headache, rashes on their bodies and died 24 hours later.

According to new reports, it's not a medical condition. The state commissioner for Information and Strategy said the illness and sudden death is connected to an exhumed corpse in the community. He said people who've died so far were those who had contact with the people who exhumed the corpse.

Vanguard reports that in the last three years President Goodluck Jonathan has pocketed N43.231 million as salary while he had in the last three years, paid N6.264 million as tax to the country.
The years which the president earned the salary and paid the tax, according to document from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, he released to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Good news as 23 year old Mary Akinloye, the maid who kidnapped the three Orekoya boys has been arrested. Speaking on Channels TV this morning, the Lagos state Police Commissioner, Kayode Aderanti, said she was arrested yesterday night but did not say where she was arrested.

Buhari will reduce petrol to N40/Litre - Tam David-West Boasts

World Bank Backs Buhari To Probe NNPC, Others

We Can't Cancel Rivers And Akwa Ibom Results - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it has no power to cancel the results of the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

It made this known to The PUNCH a few hours after the European Union Election Observation Mission to Nigeria on Monday called for a probe of the “severe problems” that characterised the polls in the two states.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idowu, said those calling on the commission to cancel the results were misdirecting their request.

He explained that once results had been announced by INEC , only election petition tribunals had the power to cancel and order fresh elections.

Idowu said, “The law does not allow us to cancel any result after it has been announced. Everyone knows this.

“It is only the election petition tribunals that can order that or even cancelled the elections. We would advice anyone who is aggrieved to go to the court. “

Also in Abuja on Monday, EU EOM said the elections in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states needed to be probed because of accusations of rigging, intimidation and violence by opponents of the winners.

Udom Emmanuel won the governorship in election in Akwa Ibom while a former Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, triumphed in Rivers.

The Chief Observer of the EU EOM, Santiago Fisas, said at a news conference that even though the elections witnessed “more efficient polling, “there were “increased incidents of violence and interference.”

He added, “On April 12, INEC referred to 66 reports of violent incidents targeting polling units, INEC officials, voters and election materials in 19 states in all geopolitical zones except for the North-East.

Abia state election is inconclusive says INEC

The Governorship election in Abia state has been declared inconclusive by the state Returning Officer, Prof Benjamin Ozumba. Prof Ozumba while briefing newsmen in Umuahia, the state capital yesterday, said irregularities in the number of registered voters in areas where elections were cancelled or did not hold was higher than the margin of difference between the leading candidates of the PDP and the All Progressive Grand Alliance in the election. AC Wins 19 states, leading in four others
LAGOS — WITH ferocious intensity, the All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday, swept into its kitty most of the 29 governorship seats contested at the weekend. The huge victory has catapulted the party to the enviable position of the dominant party in Nigeria.
With the results announced at press time, the APC won in 19 states and was leading in Plateau and Kebbi states while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Gombe and Enugu and was coasting home to victory in Rivers, Delta and Taraba.

This came as the PDP made in-road to the Lagos State House of Assembly winning six seats for the first time as APC’s Mr Akinwunmi Ambode won a tightly contested governorship election beating PDP’s Jimi Agbaje.

Nigeria's ruling party regains control of key oil state: election results

Port Harcourt (Nigeria) (AFP) - Nigeria's ruling party on Monday won back control of the key oil-producing state of Rivers, official results showed on Monday, after rigging claims by the main opposition.

Nyesom Wike, from President Goodluck Jonathan's Peoples Democratic Party, won 1,029,102 votes, while Dakuku Peterside, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), won 124,896, the electoral commission said.

International Observers Call For Total Cancellation Of Rivers Elections

International election observers today called for the cancellation of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.

The leader of African Centre for Leadership Strategies and Development, Humphrey Bekaren, who spoke on behalf of the observers, made the call in Port Harcourt. He said the observers were shocked that INEC disregarded the widely reported violent irregularities to begin the process of declaring results in the state.

Election! PDP Wins 19 Seats in Ondo Assembly, APC Gets 5

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ondo State has won 19 out of the 24 seats in Saturday’s House of Assembly election declared by INEC.

The rival APC, which won majority of seats in the National Assembly as well as the presidential election in the state in the March 28 elections, won in only five constituencies.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the state, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, who reiterated the results of the election announced earlier at various constituencies, said results of the two constituencies in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state were still outstanding.

Agbaje said the collation officers for Ilaje Constituency I and Ilaje Constituency II were forced to declare the results under duress by armed thugs.

The officers in their separate reports to Agbaje had declared the results of the two constituencies inconclusive.

Gen. Buhari Vows to Prosecute Election Offenders

 As reported by Vanguard - President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to prosecute people caught indulging in election malpractices in the country,

According to him,that is the only way to prevent offenders from reaping from where they did not sow.

“I think it has to be totally exposed so that Nigerians will know which of the law enforcement agencies and at what levels is undermining the Constitution of Nigeria because the Electoral Act is derived from the Constitution of the country, so that in future, those who are in position will know that they are not beyond the law. I think that is what will bring more stability into the system. In view of that, I will try and work with the National Assembly to make sure that we do something about it.

Football- Unstoppable Arsenal cut Chelsea's lead to four points

England's Aaron Ramsey was the saving grace for the second place Arsenal as they cut down Chelsea's lead on the English Premier League table to four points on Saturday following their 1-0 victory over Burnley at the Turf More stadium.

Glenn Murray gave the visitors the lead in the 48th minute of the game after which Bolasie put three goals in the net in 11 minutes to keep Palace 11th on the league table.

Tim Sherwood's return to White Hart Lane was unpleasant for the home team as Aston Villa stole all three points in their game on Saturday with Christian Benteke's 35th minute goal.

Tottenham had fired Sherwood following his poor performance at the club but it seems the Villa manager had paid them back with the victory that has kept them two places clear of relegation.

Election 2015 Rivers Youths Challenge Amaechi

In a tensed atmosphere of electioneering angry voters on Saturday stopped the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, from accessing polling units in Ward 11, Rumueme, Obio Akpor and in Omagwa, Ikwere local government areas of the state.

The governor, who was on his way to his hometown Ubima in Ikwere Local Government Area of the state, had stopped by at the polling unit located at the Community Primary School, Rumueme.

A youth who pleaded not to be named for security reasons said trouble started when the governor stopped by the primary school in the early hours of the day.

According to him, Mr. Amaechi attempted to walk into the polling units located in the school after addressing security operatives who were guarding the area.
