Russian Ruble Continues Slump Against The Dollar

The ruble plummeted into a freefall, losing as much as 19 percent as panic swept across Russian financial markets after a surprise interest-rate increase failed to stem the run on the currency.
The ruble plunged to as weak as 80.10 per dollar, a record low, before trading at 72.90 by 5:18 p.m. in Moscow, as Russians scrambled to convert their money into dollars amid concern the government will implement currency controls to slow the outflows. Bonds fell as the RTS stock index tumbled the most in almost six years. Government officials will gather to discuss the financial crisis engulfing the country.

“I am speechless,” Jean-David Haddad, an emerging-market strategist at OTCex Group in Paris, said in a message. “What a failure for the central bank. Russia would need to announce capital controls today. That is the last solution.”

Pakistani Pry school massacre, 126 now dead, siege ends

Eligibility for Re-election: Court Throws Out Suit Against Jonathan

The Supreme Court has thrown out the case seeking to deem President Jonathan unfit for re-election next year.
The appeal, filed by an Adamawa PDP chieftain, Dr. Umar Ardo and president over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmud Mohammed has been struck out by a five man panel of justices of the apex court.

The CJN accused Ardo of trying to get the Supreme Court to arrest a proceeding pending before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.

Apparently, the suit challenging President Jonathan's eligibility is currently before the appellate court, and the CJN said Ardo lacked the locus-standi to get the apex court to take over the case's hearing.

THE Senate may witness a change of leadership if the threat by aggrieved senators from the two main political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to impeach Senate President David Mark for not protecting them in the just concluded party primaries is carried out.If successful, the plot may see the APC producing the Senate President in addition to the House of Representatives speakership. This is coming as 168 members of the House of Representatives have endorsed the plan to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.
Some of the vocal and prominent PDP senators, who had defended the party with every available means whenever the opposition APC senators raised eye-brow over some of President Jonathan’s policies were surprised that both the Senate leadership and the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party could not reciprocate the gesture. Instead the senators were left at the mercy of state governors.
Consequently, the aggrieved senators in both the PDP and APC, who lost return tickets at the various party primaries have decided to move against the Senate leadership for not protecting them during the primaries.

It is all over. Muhammadu Buhari has beaten Atiku Abubakar to the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC). It was a fairly predictable outcome, but in politics 24 hours could make all the difference. Fears in Buhari’s camp that Atiku could get the ticket had heightened as the convention approached, but any doubt about where the pendulum would swing disappeared on Wednesday when 12 governors met and endorsed Buhari for the ticket. Atiku had his own strategy, hoping that his extensive nationwide tour and rounded experience in party primaries would swing the game in his favour ─ moreso as there are only 14 APC governors, meaning other states were there for the taking. But his strategy did not work out. Buhari carried the day. Atiku did not even come second – that slot went to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, governor of Kano state, who surprised everybody by his big showing. How did Buhari do it? Or, rather, how did Buhari’s supporters do it?
