2014 has been an interesting year. As with every other pre-election
year, there has been a lot of political drama this year. Here i take you through the 14 of the most controversial headlines events that
rocked the polity.
1. $20billion oil money controvery
In October 2013, Mallam Sanusi Lamido, then Governor of Central Bank of
Nigeria now Emir of Kano raised alarm that $49.8 billion was missing
from the federation account. By January 2014, the CBN governor switched
tone and said the missing amount was $20billion.

2. Suspension of CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
Fed up with Sanusi’s whistle blowing, President Goodluck Jonathan handed
him a suspension and the SSS seized his travel documents. It became
quite a scandal as Sanusi headed to court to fight his suspension and
the All Progressives Congress, APC lined up behind him.

3. Kidnap of Chibok school girls
On April 14, over 200 schoolgirls were abducted from Government
secondary school, Chibok in Borno state. The kidnap of the Chibok school
girls birthed the #BringBackOurGirl movement.

4. Impeachment of Murtala Nyako
Months after defecting from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
Governor Murtala Nyako was impeached by 18 out of 25 members of the
Adamawa state assembly.

5. Immigration recruitment stampede /deaths
On March 15, 19 Nigerians lost their lives during the Nigeria
Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise. The deaths brought to
the fore, the high rate of unemployment in the country and government’s
callousness.

6. Incumbent Governor Fayemi loses Ekiti gubernatorial elections
Trouble maker, Ayo Fayose defeated incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi to
clinch the Ekiti Governor seat. The election was characterized by
propaganda as the opposition found it difficult to accept the defeat of
Fayemi, who had earlier won the election on social media.

7. Patience Jonathan’s emotional outburst ; "there is God o"
Finally, the federal government admitted that the Chibok girls had been
kidnapped. First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan meddled into the matter
and tried to play detective. When her effort to get information from the
major actors failed; the first lady got emotional on national
television and wailed "there is God o"

8. Ebola in Nigeria
The dreaded Ebola Virus arrived in Lagos, Nigeria after months of
ravaging a few other West African countries. The government was ill
prepared but quickly rose to the challenge. Within months, Nigeria was
free from the virus and politicians scrambled to take credit for the
successful defeat of Ebola.

9. Sanusi becomes Emir of Kano
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria became the Emir of Kano,Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II . The nation
was shocked, even Sanusi couldn't believe his own luck.

10. Botched South African arms deal
The Nigerian government came under fire after it tried to purchase
weapons from South Africa. Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, President of the
Christian Association of Nigeria was roped into the scandal and the
country was merry with gossip.

11. Boko haram ceasefire sham
The Nigerian government announced that it had reached a ceasefire
agreement with the dreaded Boko haram terrorists group; Nigerians
jubilated until the boko haram group struck few days into the alleged
ceasefire and all hell was let loose.

12. Tambuwal’s defection
After months of sitting on the fence, speaker of the house of
representatives, Aminu Tambuwal finally defected from the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

13. Collapse of Synagogue building
A guest house belonging to Prophet T.B Joshua's Synagogue Church of All
Nations (SCOAN) collapsed on September 12, 2014 killing several persons;
mostly South Africans. While the South African government spat fire,
the Nigerian government condoled with Prophet Joshua.

14. Lawmaker’s scale assembly fence
The Nigerian Police Force attempted to stop embattled speaker of the
house of representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and his supporters from
entering the National Assembly complex. The lawmakers revolted and took
to gate climbing.
