One
of the sons of former Bayelsa State governor DSP Alamieyeseigha (DSP),
was killed in Dubai on Saturday October 11th. According to unconfirmed
reports, Oyoms Alamieyeseigha was found dead either in a hotel room or
his father’s house on Saturday. (details are still sketchy)
How and why he was killed has not been made public. Some other
reports are even saying suicide. His father left for Dubai yesterday to
go deal with the sad incident.
A
family source told SaharaReporters of the death of Oyoms
Alamieyeseigha, 24, the second son of the convicted former governor of
Bayelsa State, Diepreye S.P. Alamieyeseigha. The source disclosed that
the former governor’s son died in Dubai in what appeared to be a freak
accident in one of the plush apartment rented by the sacked former
governor in Dubai. His body was found in the corridor of the aprtment by
the security men guarding the apartment. DSP Alamieyeseigha
SaharaReporters made several attempts to speak with Mr. Alamieyeseigha, but to no avail. The former governor
hung up his phone as soon as our correspondent introduced himself as
calling from SaharaReporters. However, our source said the former
governor will leave Abuja for Dubai tonight to retrieve the body of his
dead son.“We are hearing that Oyoms [Alamieyeseigha] just suffered an accident in one of his father’s houses in Dubai and died just like that,” our source said. He said the deceased was a student in Dubai.
Former Governor Alamieyeseigha was sacked as governor in December 2005 shortly after he mysteriously returned from the UK where the police had arrested him for allegedly possessing more than one million pounds sterling in his home.
He pled guilty to six counts of corruption and money laundering and was sentenced to two years on each count. However, he hardly spent any time in jail because he was given credit for time served from the moment of his detention.
British and US authorities initiated legal processes to seize millions of dollars in cash and real estate held by former Governor Alamieyeseigha in their countries.
In March 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was the deputy governor during the administration of the disgraced former governor, granted him presidential pardon for his conviction. It is believed that Mr. Alamieyeseigha retained most of the funds he looted during his years as governor.
