Imperative of a Jonathan 2nd term By Egheomhanre Eyieyien

THOSE who are familiar with my political discourses know that I am an unapologetic supporter of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Ph.D., GCFR. I have been a “GEJite” or, if you like, a “Jonathanian” (a term coined by Nasir El Rufai thinking it is derisive) since October, 2009, when it became clear that late President Umaru Yar’adua was unlikely to continue as Nigeria’s President due to ill-health.

But I am not a “hear-no-evil; see-no-evil; speak-no-evil GEJite”. I have been critical of the President when occasion warranted it. He is human and it is inevitable that he would make mistakes. It is a disservice to him when his supporters applaud him even when he errs. That is a recipe for failure. Those who love a leader must never shy from speaking truth to him. Indeed, a wise leader cherishes those whom he knows are loyal to him yet are not afraid to tell him the truth. Yet, in our African context, the Kabiyesi complex makes it ever so hard for a leader to draw courageous counsellors to himself. Our monarchical heritage makes it all too easy to be surrounded mostly by Yes-men.

Mbaka Is Responsible For His Words, Not The Catholic Body, Catholic Priests Speak

Season of politics! Catholic Bishop of Abuja Metropolitan See, Cardinal John Onaiyekan has condemned the actions of Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka for openly asking Nigerians to reject President Jonathan in the forthcoming presidential elections which will take place next month.

Onaiyekan who spoke to ThisDay said the church never sent Mbaka to give any opinion on what was going on in the country, and Mbaka should be held responsible for his words. He went as far as saying the Catholic body should also sanction him for the utterances.

THE Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, obviously regards himself as the head of a mob of urban protesters, given his recent action at the Police Headquarters, Abuja the other day, where he faced a rowdy APC barricade in the premises in his bid to deliver a protest letter to the IGP. Earlier at a rally, the governor had promised “civil disobedience” and “parallel government” as premeditated APC response to an unfavourable outcome of the 2015 elections. He appeared to care less about the ominous consequences of such anarchy.

Amaechi has endorsed “the right to mutiny” for aggrieved members of the military forces, a direct contempt of the trial of a batch of soldiers for mutiny in the war against Boko Haram. Ironically, the governor is now speaking as campaign manager of General Muhammadu Buhari who was a victim of a mutiny of sorts in 1985 when the Babangida palace coup ousted him from power. The continuing promotion of mayhem and anarchy as the preferred alternative option for APC should it fail to win the 2015 presidential election by the governor and the tacit endorsement by the APC leadership caucus which handed over the Buhari Campaign to him does not augur well for the “progressive” posturing of the APC and indeed the future of democracy in Nigeria.

The Federal Government is proposing to spend N517.9m this year on meals and refreshments for the Presidency, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministries of power and petroleum as well as their parastatals.

The amount is contained in the details of the 2015 budget breakdown, which was obtained by Punch correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.

Out of the N517.9m, a provision of N174.54m was made for refreshments and meals for the State House in 2015.

Good news as the Akwa Ibom State choral group has broken the world record for the largest number of Christmas carol singers in the world. The record, which has been officially certified by the Guinness World Records and pasted on its website, www.guinessworldrecords.com, was broken by the unity choir, a 25,272 man-choral group, in a concert in the Uyo Township Stadium on Saturday, December 13, 2014 with Guinness World Records representatives in attendance.

The new record beats the former one which recorded 15,674 carol singers, in December, 2013 by a group known as CENTI in Bogota, Columbia.

Father Christmas arrested For defiling 5-yr-old schoolgirl in Lagos

At a Christmas party organized by a nursery and primary school in the Ojodu-Abiodun area of Ogun State,the joyful event turned awry after a five-year-old pupil from the school complained that the Father Christmas dipped a finger in her vagina and blood came out when she went in for her gift.

The matter was reportedly incidented at a police station in the area following which the said Father Christmas was arrested penultimate Friday and later released on bail. He was thereafter mandated to report to the station last Monday.

Channels Television, a Lagos-based independent 24-hour news station, on Sunday suddenly terminated a broadcast by fiery pastor, Tunde Bakare, over claims the tone of the message was critical of the Nigerian government, Premium Times reports.

Moment of Truth, a one-hour recorded paid programme, through which Mr. Bakare broadcasts messages he preaches in his church, The Latter Rain Assembly, runs every Sunday on the Lagos channel of the station, between 5p.m. and 6p.m.

But 45 minutes into the programme on Sunday, Channels terminated the programme just as Pastor Bakare was making comments considered critical of the Nigerian government.

“We had to hurriedly take the programme off air after he (Pastor Bakare) began spitting venom against the government and saying things we cannot defend,” an official of the station, who asked not to be named
because he has no permission to speak on the matter, told the newspaper.

The official did not say what those comments were, but he insisted they were serious enough that Channels could not afford to allow anyone to spread them through its station.

When contacted, the General Manager of the station, Kayode Akintemi, confirmed he received complaints over the pulling of Pastor Bakare’s broadcast.

Four members of the same family– a father, mother and their two kids– have been crushed to death by a truck laden with bags of rice. The accident was said to have happened along the Iwo-Ibadan Road in Osun State, according to Punch.

A passenger in a commercial bus, who witnessed the accident, told our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday that Mr. and Mrs. Olumide Bankole; their children, Sharon and Shama, were crushed to death by the truck which lost control in an attempt to avoid running into a queue of vehicles on the road due to a police checkpoint.

2015: Adeboye urges Redeemed members to collect voter cards

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Friday night, reiterated his call on members to ensure that they get their permanent voter cards, PVCs, to enable them exercise their civic responsibility during next month’s general elections.
Speaking on the theme, ‘The Burden Bearer’, during the church monthly Holy Ghost Service held at the Redemption Camp, Adeboye said the voter card is the only power the people have during election.
Clad in white French suit, the man of God, popularly called Daddy G.O. reminded the congregation that everyone was expected to collect and bring his/her card to the church on the first Sunday of January, saying that parish pastors will request for it.
