Must Read! Good and bad critics

By Donu Kogbara
As I pointed out last week when I was writing about people who dislike President Muhammadu Buhari for various reasons – and will continue to dislike him even if he performs magnificently – no leader can please all of the people all of the time.
The same can also be said of smaller fries like newspaper columnists! And I’ve long been wearily resigned to the fact that no matter how reasonable I think I have been, there will always be Vanguard readers who either regard me as utterly unreasonable on every single level or simply reject some of my opinions.
The world would be very boring if we were all on the same page and totally agreed with each other at all times about every topic under the sun. And I     welcome differing viewpoints that are interesting, enlightening and educational.

Sophisticated weapons we acquired made us degrade B’Haram before polls —Dasuki

Dasuki Sambo
Dasuki Sambo

By Kingsley Omonobi
ABUJA — The immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has revealed that  the acquisition of hitherto elusive weaponry in the last one year enabled the troops to have an upper hand against Boko Haram terrorists and the recovery of many local government areas that had been occupied by Boko Haram terrorists.
Sambo, whose homes in Abuja and Sokoto were invaded by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, in the week he left office named some of the deciding acquisitions to include Alpha jets, APCs, MRAP vehicles, advanced artillery pieces, assorted arms and ammunition, highly sophisticated surveillance drones, T-72 tanks and modified F7 supersonic jet fighters.

Jon Stewart Cries In Stephen Colbert’s Arms On His Last Show

Jon Stewart has now signed off from ‘The Daily Show’ for good. Before he did so, he left viewers with a celebrity-packed finale that will have everyone talking– and crying! Every correspondent from the show’s 16 years dropped by, and we even got a closing number from the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen!

Good night, Mr. Stewart. After manning The Daily Show desk for 18 seasonsJon Stewart departed the Comedy Central show for good on Aug. 6. Audiences weren’t sure what to expect, as Jon didn’t announce any of the evening’s guest beforehand, but holy smokes he did not disappoint. Bruce Springsteen, Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert (!!!) stopped by, along with a ton of other celebs so huge, we almost went blind from the pure star wattage. Good luck living up to thisTrevor Noah! Check out a full recap!

Hearing those opening notes for what we know is Jon’s last show is so, so melancholic. Alas, we get to the laughs immediately– with talk of the first republican debate. “It was…incredible,” Jon said. “So articulate.” He makes it clear very quickly that the show will not sacrifice form just because it’s the last installment.
And with that, we head over to “Ohio,” with a post-debate wrap up from some republican “representatives.” It turns out, a lot of our favorite Daily Show correspondents from over the years have gone on to represent the likes of Jeb Bush and Chris ChristieYup, Kristen Schaal, Samantha Bee, oh and Steve Carell (!!!) were all on hand to stand up for their favorite GOP contender.

Naira gains N16, closes at N215/dollar

buhari-Naira

By Yinka Kolawole
LAGOS — The naira appreciated, yesterday, against the US dollar in the parallel market, closing at N215 to a dollar. This represents an appreciation of N16 from Tuesday when a dollar exchanged for N231 in Lagos and Kano, and N230 to a dollar in Abuja.
Informed sources told Vanguard that the development follows the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to intervene in the foreign exchange market.
It was gathered that the CBN issued a circular to sell additional $30,000 to all licensed bureaux de change (BDCs) in the country on Friday, apart from the weekly sale of $30,000 that the apex bank normally makes to each BDC.

Cultists kill night club staff over bill

By Chidi Nkwopara  OWERRI—A gang of hoodlums, Monday night, stormed a popular night club (names withheld) in World Bank Housing Estate, New Owerri, killing a staff for daring to challenge them over an unpaid bill.  While some of the customers described the gang as cultists, others believed they were armed robbers or assassins, who were out to even scores with their alleged enemies.  Vanguard gathered that the four-man armed gang stormed the night club, ate and drank to their fill but wanted to leave without paying their bill.  One of the customers of the night club, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, told Vanguard that the deceased stepped in as soon as it was clear that the gang had overpowered the bar man and wanted to leave without clearing their bill.  The customer said: “The boys were enraged when they realised that the deceased, Mr. Incredible, was not deterred when they fired several shots at the walls of the night club. They then shot him.”  Vanguard also gathered that police patrol teams arrived the scene as soon as they got the information, gave the fleeing hoodlums a chase and arrested two suspects.  The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the suspects were cooling their heels in police custody.  He said: “The command is still investigating, to know why the shooting took place as well as unmask those behind crime.”  He assured the public that as soon as police investigations were over, prosecuting the suspects would follow.  Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue, awaiting post-mortem examination and burial.

President, NASS intensify efforts on release of Chibok girls

Abuja—President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerian lawmakers have promised to intensify their efforts to ensure the safe return of the Chibok Girls, U.S. Congress woman, Federica Wilson, has said.
Wilson, who represents the State of Florida in Congress, made the statement, yesterday, in Abuja while addressing members of the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, group.
She said it was part of the responsibilities of Nigerian lawmakers to advocate for the release of the Chibok girls.
She urged lawmakers especially from the North-East region to challenge the Federal Government and state governors on efforts being made to rescue the girls.
The congress woman also urged Nigerians to stand up for their rights by asking their elected representatives relevant questions that would encourage them to identify with and act fast in the struggle for the return of the girls.
Wilson added that it was also the duty of elected officials to cater for those who elected them in office.
“We need to say to them; this is a new day in Nigeria.
“You have a new president; you have a new House of Representatives and a new Senate.
“Believe me you have the power to put pressure on the people you elected to deliver to the people of Nigeria, to stamp out Boko Haram and find the Chibok girls,” she said.

Nigeria refineries low on Petrol production

By Clara Nwachukwu
Current data on refineries production in Nigeria indicate that more heavy or fuel oils (low and high fuel oil/black oil) are being produced from the four refineries than other high demand products like premium motor spirit, PMS, otherwise known as petrol.  The revelation comes despite assurances by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, which said last week that two of its refineries were working between 60 and 80 percent of their installed capacities.
NNPC had promised that the four refineries would be re-streamed by July end, when the turn around maintenance, TAM, of the hitherto almost comatose refineries would have been rounding up, thus, buoying high hopes for imminent relief from products scarcity in the country.

Corruption: Buhari descends on civil servants

By Clifford Ndujihe & Levinus Nwabughiogu
ABUJA— Disturbed by the rot and thriving corruption in the civil service, which has cost the country trillions of naira, President Muhammadu Buhari has taken his anti-graft war to the sector.
He has ordered that all outstanding audit queries which had piled up over the years be resolved within the next 30 days.
Confirming the presidential directive, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the unanswered audit queries sounded unsavoury to the President who, on hearing it, expressed his displeasure.
An audit query is the request for an explanation by the Auditor-General of the Federation over improprieties discovered in the Accountant-General of the Federation’s report. The report is done quarterly.

Gowon: We are better off with Igbos

Nigeria’s wartime leader, Gen Yakubu Gowon, says “Nigeria is better off with Igbos.” He spoke while delivering an oration at the burial service for Chief (Mrs.) Chinyere Asika, wife of the former Sole Administrator of East Central State; just as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, described the deceased as a woman who exemplified the virtue of patience, charity and humility. The service took place  at the All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Gowon’s declaration was borne out of a deep appreciation of the commitment and sacrifice of the deceased and her husband, Ajie Ukpabi Asika, to the survival of Nigeria as one entity. The former Head of State recalled that when he proposed the post of Sole Administrator of East Central State, Asika told me, “I prefer to do this for the good of Igbo people.”

He went on: “I was struggling to get an administrator for the newly created East Central State when the name of the late Ukpabi Asika came up. He was then a lecturer at Ibadan. When we met, I did  not know which one of us was younger. But he exuded strength of character and understanding, and wanted to start work immediately. I cautioned him to think about it. I told him, `you must consult your brothers, and your wife to know if you would accept’. I came away convinced that this was the man I needed.

We don’t need foreign aid – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari believes Nigeria does not need foreign aid if the world powers can help her plug all the loopholes that had been used by government officials to steal her assets.

A Presidency official on Buhari’s four-day visit to the United States (US), which ended on Wednesday, quoted the President, yesterday, as telling US officials that Nigeria has the resources to stand on her feet, and that the world powers should help her.

In the meantime, Nigeria is to draw down investments and cash worth $13.6 billion following negotiations and understanding reached by Buhari with the American government during the visit, Sunday Vanguard learnt, yesterday.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Secreatry of state, John Kerry in Washington DC on July 21st 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari and Secreatry of state, John Kerry in Washington DC on July 21st 2015
The President met with US President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, among many other top functionaries, during the visit.
“Buhari did not go to the US with a begging bowl. We don’t need foreign aid, he told everyone, so long as the world powers can help us plug all the loopholes that had been used to steal our assets,” Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Publicity, disclosed to Sunday Vanguard.
Whereas the President said, during the visit, that about $150 billion is stolen annually from Nigeria and many other African countries, the Presidency official said, ”Americans hold the view that between $10 billion and $20 billion dollars is lost annually through the crude oil sector alone.”
He quoted his boss as saying: ”There is no organisation or government (across the world) that can give us (Nigeria) $5 billion. If we plug our loopholes and recover stolen money stashed abroad, Nigeria will do well by herself.”
A breakdown of the $13.6 billion earmarked for Nigeria, courtesy of the Buhari US visit, shows that $5 billion is coming for investments in the power sector, another $5 billion is to fund investments in the agricultural sector, $1.5 billion is from the Bill Gates Foundation while $2.1 billion is being provided by the World Bank.
Of particular interest is the discovery that the huge sums being brought for investments into the country, according to the Presidency official, attract no counterpart funding.
Similarly, in its efforts to assist Nigeria eradicate polio, the Bill Gates Foundation, which is revving its support with additional $1.2 billion, is extending its areas of coverage to four more states – Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno and Yobe.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President described Buhari’s outing in the U.S as a monumental success.
According to him, no Nigerian leader ever achieved that kind of success in one visit.
Shehu said: ” From our point of view, no past President of this country has ever netted these for Nigeria from a single U.S. trip. Overall, it is a resounding success.
“The clamour for President Buhari was astounding. He was gone after by every member of the United States establishment. He met Secretary of State John Kerry, Vice President Joe Biden and the President of the United States, Barack Obama.
“I am not sure there was any past Nigerian President who met as many a number of Secretaries of U.S. Departments as Buhari did and, in all of these meetings, the personal integrity of President Buhari came through.”

The United States government helped Boko Haram immensly by refusing to classify them as a terrorist organisation until 2014 and by refusing to sell us arms to fight them. Worst still, they imposed an international arms embargo on us so that we could not buy arms from anyone else in the international community. When asked why they are doing this to us they tell us that it is because of the Leahy Act which prohibits them from selling arms to governments that violate the human rights of their own citizens.

Senate leadership snafu

It is no longer news that Bukola Saraki emerged as Senate President under very controversial circumstances. The eerie calm that pervades the membership of the All Progressives Congress- a party that has been in existence for less than two years, unlike the Peoples Democratic Party that has been in government and in power for 16 unbroken years – as they struggle to come to terms with Saraki’s abracadabra, can best be described as the peace of the graveyard.
Those who hold the APC leadership solely responsible for the crisis rocking the party to its foundations since the June 9 National Assembly leadership elections may be justified for saying so. It is now crystal clear that the party leadership took their eyes off the ball. In their state of euphoria after achieving an unprecedented electoral victory, the leadership failed to appreciate that managing success is even more taxing than winning an election. They vacillated when they ought to have acted with promptness.
But to be fair, it wasn’t for want of trying that the leadership of the APC failed to resolve the problem while it was still manageable. The leaders were hamstrung by President Muhammadu Buhari’s earlier pronouncement that he wasn’t interested in who got what in the National Assembly. Given the President’s stance, the APC tip-toed around the issue to prevent being seen to be foisting unpopular choices on their members in the National Assembly.

FG Stops Paying The School Fees Of N’delta Students In Foreign Universities

President, Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, has raised the alarm over the plight of over 6,000 Niger Delta students on Federal Government’s scholarships in some foreign universities.

He said the authorities of the foreign universities had started delisting the students, majority of whom were Ijaws, due to the alleged Federal Government’s failure to pay the students’ fees.

Eradiri, who made the revelation at a news conference on Tuesday in Yenagoa, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and other well meaning Nigerians to wade into the matter to save the students.

He said the students’ plight was compounded by the vacuum in the Presidential Amnesty Programme because of absence of an administrator for the programme.

The IYC boss said the amnesty programme had of recent been beset with a lot of bureaucratic bottlenecks due to absence of an administrator.

He therefore urged President Buhari to appoint an administrator for the programme or do whatever he could with “the executive power he wields to ensure that somebody begins to take responsibility in that office.”

He said he had been under intense pressure in trying to maintain the peace in the region because stipends to ex-agitators had not been paid for the last two months.

Eradiri said he and other Ijaw leaders had been appealing for calm and for them not to take to the streets, nor go back to the creeks.

He stressed that they had been appealing to them to give President Buhari an opportunity to run government.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on the Niger Delta leaders, well meaning Nigerians and President Muhammadu Buhari to the fact that the cause of the vacuum in the presidential amnesty programme is as a result of the change in leadership.

“It has begun to tell on the lives of our young ones that are undergoing university training as a result of the amnesty programme in various countries – America, United Kingdom, London, South Africa and other African countries where we have young Nigerians.

“These young Nigerians who are undergoing education and training scattered round the world, because of the bureaucratic nature of the programme, the funding used to be month by month, most of the upkeep of the students is usually on a monthly basis.

But for two months now, the students have not been paid; the financial obligations to the institutions have not been met and so we heard the shocking news that some of the institutions have started delisting some of the students studying there.

“As for the UK, we know that rents are paid monthly and when the stipends are paid, these students also pay their rent. As I speak to you, a lot of them now are being thrown out of their accommodation; they are all on the streets.”

He said the matter was getting to a breaking point where they could no longer hold them (youths) back because “we have been doing that with just the word of mouth and the goodwill we enjoy as leaders. But when government fails to do their own part, then very unfortunately, we will not be able to maintain the peace as it was in the last few months.”

Aregbesola Commences Salary Payment, Cuts Pay Of Political Office Holders

Osun state government led by Governor Rauf Aregbesola has begun paying the salary arrears owed civil servant in the state.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Office and signed by Semiu Okanlawon, Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, the government said it is paying the balance of November and full December salary arrears owed. “We must assure our people that serious efforts are on to ensure the remaining months are also cleared,” the statement said.
Also, the government has announced a 50 per cent cut in salaries and allowances of all political office holders in the state. The statement further read that the government, while saddened and troubled by the turn of events in the financial status of the state and the country at large, is taking responsibility for the unfortunate problem and is prepared to meet the challenge head-on.
“Since the inception of this government, we have treated the resources under our control with the utmost respect and disbursed them diligently for the greater benefits of our people. Our mandate had always been to use our God-given wealth to bridge the gap between the downtrodden and the government.
“It is very unfortunate that we find ourselves unable to pay our workers their due wages for several months when, in the past, we stood for paying on or before the 25th of each month. We thank the ever gracious and understanding workers of our state for their patience as we go through this most trying time.

“However, we are glad to announce that we have commenced the process of paying for the balance of November and full December salary arrears for all our workers across the state and the process should be concluded by Friday, July 3rd, 2015. We are able to do this because our partners and creditors have faith in us and we have proven to be responsible and trustworthy.
“We must emphasize at this point: We are not out of the woods yet! Our finances took a dive because we were hit by the shock of the sudden and massive drop in global oil prices while Nigeria also had a Federal Government that failed in its primary responsibility to secure our people and our commonwealth. Thanks to the Nigerian people, that evil leadership has been removed and replaced with a progressive one. That does not translate to instant cure for our near-empty pockets. We must take drastic steps to correct many of our past errors and embrace the true realities of today.
“Therefore, we hereby announce a 50 per cent cut to the salaries and allowances of all political office holders and appointees. This is one of the many steps we are taking to ensure the sustenance of our collective. We are also calling on our people to join us and do their part in carrying the weight of change.
“Austerity stares us right in the face. We must embrace it. We are going to intensify our efforts at prudence and frugality. We will practice self-denial in every way possible.
“As we proceed on this journey of self-discovery, we hope to put more and more of our people to work by attracting productive investments to our state. The better part of our resources will go to funding capital projects that will create employment and unlock wealth. The State of Osun will rise from this situation and prosper like never before.”

Former President Jonathan's Son Hale And Hearty - Aides - Sahara Reporters

Ariwera, a teenage son of former President Goodluck Jonathan, is hale and hearty, contrary to rumors of his passing, sources close to the former Nigeria leader said.

Social media outlets were buzzing with the rumor all of Tuesday. SaharaReporters had reported that the former President was vacationing in Los Angeles.

8 Governors Ask Oyegun To Resign

ABUJA – Crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC appeared to have now sprawled into a full blown war between the governors elected on the party’s platform and the national chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun with the governors asking him to honorably resign.

The governors who paid a surprised visit to Oyegun at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday after their meeting with president Mohammadu Buhari were said to have conveyed their demands to the chairman in a closed door meeting they had with him.

The governors who visited Oyegun included Comrade Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger) Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Abubuakar Badaru (Jigawa).
