Jonathan gives automatic employment, scholarship and grants to 164 ex-corps members

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday announced Federal Government’s automatic employment and scholarship for 164 former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who had distinguished themselves during service.
The automatic employment is bestowed on President’s NYSC Honours awardees who also will enjoy automatic scholarship to study up to Doctorate degree in any University of their choice across the world.
The NYSC Hope Alive Initiative which attracted over N23million donations in 2014, is aimed at giving hope and succour to corps members who became physically challenged during their service year.
The President while announcing the employment and scholarships at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, said those “awardees not already employed by their state governments would be absolved into the federal civil service”
The 164 awardees were selected for their exceptional performances during their service year.
The President in his speech promised to continue to accord priority to youth empowerment programs.
According to the President, “ A nation that does not build the youth is building a nation for disaster” “ On our part, we will continue to accord priority to youth development through policies and programmes that will empower them not only for economic survival, but also for future leadership roles in our nation. The Federal Government will continue to initiate policies and programmes that are focussed on our youths”. The President appealed to other Corporate Organisations to emulate this laudable initiative as the expertise of these distinguished Nigerians should be utilised by both public and private sectors
.
The Heritage Bank made the first donation of N1.5million for each of the nine members of the initiative while the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, donated N5million to the initiative.
One out of the nine members of the initiative whose injury is said to be worse than the others as it is difficult for her to even use the wheel chair and so could not make it to the award, received a N5million donation from the chairman of the Ibeto Groups.
The Hope Alive Programme seeks to identify and recognize corps members who had the misfortune of becoming physically challenged as a result of injuries they sustained in the course of their National Service to the country.
