A four-year-old boy was left in tears
after he found a condom in a bowl of Tesco own-brand cornflakes – and
the chain offered the family just £20 in compensation.
The youngster was being looked after by his uncle’s fiancee as he made the horrid discovery. The woman, who asked not to be named, said that the youngster did not know what a condom was, and was began screaming when he saw the shiny packet bobbing in his breakfast.
She says that she complained immediately, but says she felt ‘fobbed off’ after Tesco staff offered her a £20 gift voucher and a bunch of flowers.
The breakfast cereal was purchased last week from a supermarket in Barnstaple, Devon.
The woman said: ‘He started screaming and there was lots of commotion. I asked him what was wrong and told him to calm down and eat his cereal.
‘Then I looked down and saw something shiny in the bowl. I picked out what I thought was packaging and to my horror it was a condom.
‘My boyfriend came in wondering what the commotion was about and saw the condom. He was disgusted.’
The woman added: ‘I told them there was a condom in my cornflakes and the woman put her head down and was really embarrassed. She went and got me a big bunch of flowers.
‘I don’t want people to think I am after money but they told me in Tesco this is the worst thing they had found. I am stressed about the whole thing.’
The chain has promised to investigate how the contraceptive came to be in the box.
