The Lagos State Government on Friday took its campaign against
domestic and gender-based violence to Orile Agege Local Council
Development Area (LCDA).
Leading the campaign team, assistant director, Ministry of Women
Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Olufunke Odutola, said
government was worried about the rising cases of domestic violence,
especially against women and children, despite the laws prohibiting the
act.
She said the campaign, supported by the United Nations Population
Fund (UNFPA), was geared towards ensuring that people are aware that
gender-based violence is a crime against the state and to see that it is
drastically reduced and perpetrators brought to book.
Addressing the legislative arm of the council, Odutola said: “In
2007, the former Governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, signed the
Protection Against Domestic Violence Law to guard against violence, and
we have since domesticated the law and we are running with it. The law
covers sexual abuse, rape and so on.”
“In some parts of Lagos, people do not know about the law and we have
come today to let you know that you have a role to play because you are
closer to the community where such things happen on a daily basis.”
